Liverpool wanted Konrad Laimer but have now pulled out of the race the RB Leipzig star with Bayern Munich now on the verge of signing him.
That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, who claims that Liverpool have now given up hope of signing Laimer.
Romano claims that Liverpool were hoping to sign Laimer but have now realised that it just isn’t going to happen.
Bayern have been leading the race to sign Laimer for some time and Romano claims that move is very close.
Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann has been desperate to reunite with Laimer having worked together at RB Leipzig – and it looks like he’s landed his man.
Laimer is out of contract at the end of the season and can move on for free, with Bayern on the verge of a bargain move.
Liverpool will be gutted to miss out on Laimer
It just feels like Laimer would have been perfect for Liverpool.
The Austrian is a relentless pressing machine and his bargain availability would have allowed Liverpool to sign him as well as a star like Jude Bellingham.
Laimer has even played as a right back or right wing back, making him potentially ideal to cover the space left by Trent Alexander-Arnold’s marauding runs forward.
Laimer also admitted that he grew up idolising Steven Gerrard, so following in his footsteps at Liverpool seemed ideal.
Yet it seems the pull of Nagelsmann and Bayern has won the race, securing his signature whilst becoming the latest Leipzig player to join Bayern.
Dayot Upamecano and Marcel Sabitzer have done the same in recent years, also snubbing Premier League interest for the Bundesliga giants.
That’s one name to cross off Liverpool’s midfield wish list anyway, with Jurgen Klopp and co needing to focus elsewhere as Laimer prepares for a move to Bavaria in 2023.
