Liverpool are now aware of Kalvin Phillips’ stance on a transfer from Manchester City amid Jurgen Klopp showing interest in a last-gasp deal to sign the England midfielder.

That is according to Ben Jacobs, who has claimed that Liverpool know Phillips does not want to leave Manchester City. The 27-year-old has shown no desire to leave Etihad Stadium after just one season. So, Klopp has not advanced the Anfield natives’ interest in his signature yet.

It is impossible to completely rule out Phillips accepting a late transfer away if Pep Guardiola makes it clear the 27-cap anchor has no future at Manchester City. But Liverpool have so far kept their powder dry with the Leeds-born star desperate to stay put and fight for his place.

Liverpool know Phillips’ stance on transfer from Manchester City

Liverpool hold a long-standing interest in Phillips having targeted his transfer whilst at Leeds United. But Manchester City beat the Reds to the punch by agreeing to a £45m deal in July 2022. Phillips also agreed to sign a six-year contract at Etihad Stadium worth £160k-a-week.

Klopp would welcome a chance to revisit the Reds’ pursuit of the Leeds product’s signature this year. But Liverpool have not advanced their interest over recent days as they know that Phillips wants to stay at Manchester City. Yet they may step forward if he performs a U-turn.

Guardiola has struggled to rely on the injury-plagued midfielder

Guardiola only fielded Phillips in 21 games for a mere 593 minutes across all competitions in 2022/23. The midfielder endured a torrid time with injuries and only started in four fixtures. He is also still yet to appear this season following four outings as an unused substitute so far.

Injuries even frustrated Phillips’ final season at Leeds but he remained an instrumental part of their side. The Whites often relied on Phillips to serve as the foundations of their system. He also offered the Elland Road outfit an option in central defence, as well as their midfield.
