Caoimhin Kelleher enjoyed a great night for Liverpool on Tuesday, and has now received praise from Rangers stopper Andy Firth.
Liverpool advanced into the last 16 of the Carabao Cup with a 3-0 win at Norwich City on Tuesday night.
Takumi Minamino bagged a brace, scoring either side of a Divock Origi goal to send Liverpool through.
It wasn’t all about the goalscorers though, as goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher pulled off a first-half penalty save.
Kelleher takes his Liverpool chance
Kelleher has an unenviable task at Liverpool with Alisson Becker ahead of him in the pecking order.
The Irishman can absolutely carve out a role as Liverpool’s backup goalkeeper though, and that now appears to be a reality.
Kelleher started for Liverpool at Norwich, and saved a Christos Tzolis spot kick in the first half.
With a clean sheet and three points, Kelleher will feel this was a very successful night’s work.
Firth praises Kelleher
Not every goalkeeper coming through the Liverpool ranks ends up playing in the first team like Kelleher.
In the case of Andy Firth, he came up through the Liverpool ranks before leaving in 2018.
After a short stint at Barrow, Steven Gerrard took him to Rangers. Firth, 24, has been a backup goalkeeper at Ibrox ever since.
Firth will have worked with Kelleher at Liverpool, and sent him a message after Tuesday’s display.
Firth stated on Instagram ‘solid as always big man’, hailing Kelleher as he continues to make strides at Anfield.
