Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has given his thoughts on Everton ahead of the 2019-20 Premier League season getting under way, as reported by BBC Sport.

The Toffees finished eighth in the table last term, with impressive wins over the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United tempered by losses to the likes of Fulham.

On the whole, however, Everton had a strong finish to the campaign and this summer they have bolstered their ranks significantly, raising optimism amongst the Goodison Park fanbase.

The impressive Andre Gomes joined the Toffees on a permanent deal from Barcelona while Jonas Lossl, Fabian Delph and Jean-Philippe Gbamin also arrived at Goodison Park.

Everton also pulled off a huge coup in signing Italian striker Moise Kean, one of the most highly rated youngsters in world football, from Juventus late last week.

In conversation with BBC Sport‘s Football Daily Liverpool special, Klopp was asked about who he expects to be in the Premier League title race along with Liverpool and Manchester City.

In response, as well as making reference to the other four teams in the Premier League’s “big six” – Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester United – he subsequently name-checked Everton and praised their “ambitious” outlook and transfer activity this summer, hinting that they could be dark horses in the upper echelons of the table.

“If you are around City or level with them then you must be really good,” he replied. “I see all the other four teams and Everton looks really ambitious, bringing in lots of players. So many things can happen. I would like to say again that it is us and City – but this time us on top. But we cannot know.”

Everton get their Premier League season under way on Saturday away at Crystal Palace, while Liverpool kick off the campaign on Friday night at home against newly promoted Norwich City, and this season’s Merseyside derbies will take place on 4 December at Anfield and on 14 March next year at Goodison.
