Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has hailed Barcelona midfielder Gavi after his superb performance against Real Madrid on Sunday.

Gavi was reminding fans of prime Andreas Iniesta as he lined up on the left flank in the Spanish Super Cup.

Sure enough, Gavi got himself on the scoresheet as he opened the scoring with a smart finish from Robert Lewandowski’s pass.

Gavi then turned creator, picking out Lewandowski to score from close range and pull Barcelona clear.

Pedri made it 3-0 with Gavi racking up another assist before Karim Benzema handed Real something of a consolation goal.

Jamie Carragher hails recent Liverpool target Gavi

Barcelona will be delighted to have won a first piece of silverware under Xavi, and that Gavi is with them rather than Liverpool.

The Reds were linked with a move to sign Gavi from Barcelona on many occasions in 2022.

Graeme Bailey reported that talks had been held with Liverpool with Gavi unsettled after reading that Barcelona wanted to sign Bernardo Silva from Manchester City.

Gavi did eventually decide to stay with Barcelona and signed a new deal until the summer of 2026.

Liverpool’s midfield is struggling and creaking this season, so they will no doubt wish they had managed to sign Gavi.

Liverpool legend Carragher has taken to Twitter to rave about Gavi’s display having watched him shine against Real Madrid.

Carragher stated ‘what a player Gavi is’ having been blown away by his performance on the big stage.

Gavi, 18, was impressive at the World Cup and seems to be on a path to becoming a superstar for a long, long time.

Liverpool’s chance of signing Gavi appears to have disappeared now and Jurgen Klopp just has to hope that Julian Ward and co can find Liverpool’s very own Gavi in the near future.
