Liverpool wanted to sign Jadon Sancho – but his wage demands scuppered the move despite the backing of Jurgen Klopp, Pepijn Lijnders and FSG.

Liverpool maybe don’t splash quite as much cash as Manchester City, but they do make big moves when needed.

Deals for the likes of Alisson, Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho and Luis Diaz have helped take Liverpool forward.

Darwin Nunez is the latest big-money signing for Liverpool and they will be hoping that the Uruguayan striker hits the ground running.

Liverpool wanted to sign Jadon Sancho

One big-money Premier League addition that hasn’t really shown his best form is Jadon Sancho.

Manchester United finally signed Sancho after a long-term pursuit of the Borussia Dortmund winger, paying a huge fee of £73million.

Sancho had been a star in Germany and four years after leaving Manchester City for Dortmund, United hauled him back to the North West.

Sadly, Sancho wasn’t quite able to show his best form in a disjointed United side.

The 22-year-old showed glimpses of his quality but finished the season with only three goals and three assists in the Premier League.

The expectation is that Sancho will kick on with United next season but it could have all been so different for the winger.

The National report that Liverpool were ready to pay up for Sancho last summer.

They claim that both Jurgen Klopp and Pepijn Lijnders wanted to sign Sancho and the Fenway Sports Group were willing to pay that £73million fee.

However, Sancho demanded £270,000-a-week, a deal that Liverpool just weren’t willing to pay whereas United were.

It’s suggested that if Sancho had asked for around half of those wages, Liverpool would have moved to sign him.

Instead, Liverpool have ended up adding Diaz and Nunez to Klopp’s front line and you won’t find many Reds fans yearning for Sancho off the back of those signings.
