Without having to actually do anything themselves, Liverpool suddenly find themselves in a great position to sign Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Arsenal.

This is because the BBC reports the 24-year-old has rejected the chance to join Chelsea despite a £40m fee being agreed between the two London clubs.

Oxlade-Chamberlain was fearful that after being used as a wing-back by the Gunners so far this season, the Blues had a similar plan for him.

What the England international actually wants to do is prove himself in his preferred role of central midfield, which is something the Reds could offer him and is why the former Southampton man favours a move to Anfield.

The Merseysiders are expected to make a bid for Oxlade-Chamberlain before the transfer window shuts on Thursday (August 31), but it will be short of the £40m that had been offered.

This will leave Arsenal in a difficult position because the midfielder has now entered the final year of his current contract at the Emirates Stadium and therefore they risk losing the Englishman for free in less than 12 months time.
