Liverpool fans may be surprised to hear that Steven Gerrard didn’t name his former teammate Luis Suarez among the 3 top players in the world right now.
Gerrard himself ranked among the world’s top players in his prime
Two-time FA Cup winning midfielder Steven Gerrard named the best three players in the world right now whilst being interviewed for ‘Galaxy TV’ yesterday.
The Liverpool legend will have surprised some people with his omission of ex-Reds teammate Luis Suarez, who is a player he has often reserved the highest praise for.
That being said, one suspects there was more than a hint of tongue-in-cheek about the former England captains comments, naming a surprise candidate alongside established world class superstars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Lionel Messi and Cristian Ronaldo were two of the three players Gerrard named as being the best in the world right now
Very few people wouldn’t include Messi and Ronaldo, who are widely regarded as two of the finest players to ever play the game, among their top three, although a similarly small minority would name Gerrard’s other choice.
“Now it’s obviously Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Robbie Keane, they’re the best three in the world now, aren’t they,” claimed the ex-Liverpool captain.
It seems unlikely that Gerrard really considers Keane in the same bracket as the aforementioned pair, but the Republic of Ireland’s all-time leading goal scorer has certainly been a revelation over in the US.
Gerrard named former Tottenham & Liverpool striker Robbie Keane as one of the three best players on the planet right now
Keane, who retired from international football in some style last week, moved to the MLS in 2011, and has scored 101 goals in 158 games since making the move, now into his fifth season for LA Galaxy.
Gerrard meanwhile enjoyed a less successful start to life in the MLS, finding his first season a real struggle, being surprised by the speed of the game and the traveling involved, but appears to have settled down in his second season.
It is not the first time Gerrard and Keane have played together, as the Ireland forward played briefly for the Reds back in 2008, scoring 7 goals in 28 games before making a speedy return to White Hart Lane.
Robbie Keane scored more Premier League goals than Didier Drogba
Only 6 goals separate Gerrard and Keane in the all-time Premier League scorers charts, with Gerrard having scored 120 league goals for Liverpool, and Keane bagging 126 for Coventry, Leeds, Tottenham, Liverpool, West Ham and Aston Villa.
Whilst Keane’s goal scoring record is undoubtedly impressive, it is some way off the two men Gerrard jokingly compared him to.
Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo has scored a superb 487 goals in 673 games over his career, whilst Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has an even better record, having scored 467 goals in 567 games overall.
