The Reds and Brazil ace has scored 16 goals in the Premier League and Champions League this season.
Liverpool legend Ian Rush has given his thoughts on Roberto Firmino, suggesting that the Brazil international doesn’t get enough credit as “people always talk about Mane and Salah”.
The Reds goalscoring icon also thinks that people don’t realise just how skilful the 27-year-old actually is, and stated that he has never seen him have a bad game.
Firmino, who plays in the number 9 shirt made famous at Anfield by Rush, has scored 16 goals in all competitions this season, while his overall tally stands at 66 goals and 47 assists from 189 games (Transfermarkt).
“Firmino never has a bad game. He’s always a 9 out of 10 and his work-rate is incredible,” the Welshman told Sky Sports News at an Ian Rush Foundation event.
“People always talk about Mane and Salah but Firmino has also popped up with the goals despite not looking like a typical striker. He is a work-horse and he has so much so skill but because he works his socks off I don’t think people realise how skilful he really is. I’ve never seen him have a bad game.”
Firmino joined Liverpool from Hoffenheim in the summer of 2015 for a fee of £36.9million (Transfermarkt) and was originally recruited to be mostly used as an attacking midfielder, but Jurgen Klopp then opted to utilise him as a centre-forward given his ability to press.
Although Klopp returned to deploying Firmino as a number 10 for much of the first half of the season, with Mohamed Salah in the middle and Xherdan Shaqiri on the right, the Brazilian is now playing once again at number 9.
Up next for Liverpool is Sunday’s Premier League trip to relegation-battling Cardiff City, and victory will see them leapfrog Manchester City back at the top of the table.
