Liverpool are making moves for Moises Caicedo but still think Chelsea lead the race for the Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder.

Moises Caicedo is wanted at Liverpool but the belief is that he will still end up as a Chelsea player.

That is according to The Athletic, who claim that Liverpool have made contact to try and sign Caicedo.

This comes after The Telegraph reported earlier today that Liverpool have actually outbid Chelsea for Caicedo’s signature.

The Reds appear to be exploring a deal for Caicedo after failing to convince Southampton to sell Romeo Lavia.

Maybe this is all a tactic to tempt the Saints into selling but with Chelsea also targeting Lavia, that seems unlikely.

The problem for Liverpool is that the Anfield hierarchy believe Chelsea have done so much groundwork for Caicedo’s signature that they still think the blues are leading the race.

Chelsea are pushing for Lavia and are set to sign Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams though, which may just give Liverpool hope of landing Caicedo.

Liverpool desperately need a defensive midfielder amid Moises Caicedo chase

Liverpool pounced for Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai earlier this summer and were probably hoping to land another defensive midfielder.

Their need for defensive options has only increased though as both Jordan Henderson and Fabinho have moved on to Saudi Arabia.

The Premier League kick off is just days away and Liverpool don’t really have a natural holding midfielder to utilise.

Liverpool simply have to pay up for a target sooner or later and there may be having a change of approach.

The Reds have been trying to haggle for the signing of Lavia but Southampton are sticking to £50million as their asking price.

Rather than pay that kind of money for a teenager, Liverpool may instead pay double the price in order to snap up a more proven player in Caicedo.

The Brighton star has been hailed as an ‘excellent holding player’ by Bryan Robson and may be exactly what Liverpool are seeking.

Liverpool clearly know that beating Chelsea won’t be easy but we could now see a big push from the Reds for the Ecuadorian star.
