Liverpool hero Pepe Reina has made it clear that he strongly disagrees with the European Super League proposals, applauding Ander Herrera’s emotional monologue on Twitter.
Lazio supporters know better than most that missing out on a place at Europe’s top table can feel rather painful.
One of the biggest clubs in Italian football endured over a decade without Champions League football between 2007 and 2020.
But that only made their return, after 13 years away, all the more sweeter when Simone Inzaghi’s side secured their qualification last season.
Of course, Lazio had to earn their place in the competition. Back when, you know, football was actually a competitive sport rather than some sort of shallow, semi-manufactured reality TV vehicle.
And Reina, the one-time Liverpool goalkeeper now plying his trade at the Stadio Olimpico, is standing firm behind PSG ace Ander Herrera as footballers across the continent start to make their feelings known.
“I believe in an improved Champions League, but not in the rich stealing what the people created, which is nothing other than the most beautiful sport on the planet,” Herrera wrote, as translated by Football Espana.
Liverpool are one of six Premier League clubs pushing for a dramatic shake-up of European football, alongside Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Manchesters United and City.
