Liverpool are signing Cody Gakpo.
The Reds have agreed a deal with PSV for the winger, and barring any last-minute hitches, the Dutchman will be headed to Anfield next month.
This deal is exciting for a number of reasons. For a start, the Reds are bringing in last season’s Eredivisie Player of the Year, which is always great to see, but perhaps the most intriguing thing about this move is how it came about.
Indeed, this transfer kind of came from out of nowhere.
It looked like Gakpo was headed to Manchester United in January, and failing that it looked as though Arsenal were second in the queue, but, suddenly, on Boxing Day, the Reds gazumped everyone and closed the deal.
It wasn’t even as though there was any speculation leading up to this. Paul Joyce broke the news on Friday evening, and within two hours it was made official on PSV’s end.

The fact that Liverpool can operate so quickly without any leaks or hints makes the January transfer window that much more exciting.
Protracted transfer stories and rumours are bound to emerge, but Liverpool have now proven that they’re also capable of pulling a rabbit out of the hat and signing a player without any prior warning, and that makes the club even more exciting to follow.
In an age of 24/7 coverage and an obsession about transfers within the media, Liverpool managed to pull this one out of thin air, and if they can do that with a player as high-profile as Gakpo, they can do it with anyone.
The Reds have shown that they know how to keep a signing under wraps, and it isn’t ridiculous to suggest that they may have one or two more tricks up their sleeve next month.
The Merseyside club’s ability to spring these transfers makes it impossible to take your eyes off of the Reds during the transfer window.
