Liverpool’s transfer business this summer has been impressive.
The Reds got all of their business done in the opening weeks of the window, and now, their new signings looks ready to make their mark on the Premier League.
Darwin Nunez grabbed all of the headlines at the weekend with his goal and assist against Fulham, but there was another debutant that Liverpool supporters should be excited about.
Indeed, Fabio Carvalho came off the bench to make his Liverpool debut on Saturday, and there’s reason to believe he could be looked back on as one of the Reds’ greatest signings in years to come.
Carvalho is a special player. He was nominated for the Championship Young Player of the Year award last season as Fulham won the title, and he absolutely tore defences to shreds in the second-tier.
Liverpool landed the attacking midfielder for just £7.7m this summer, and that is already looking like one of the Reds’ greatest bargains.
To put it into perspective how cheap Carvalho was, you just have to look at the premium being put on some other Championship players.
Keane Lewis-Potter, a player two years older with six fewer goal contributions than Carvalho last season, cost £20m this summer, while Morgan Gibbs-White, a player three years older with a very similar record to Carvalho is being subjected to bids as high as £42m.
In that context, putting his performances, age and potential into account, it’s not ridiculous to suggest that Carvalho’s true value is somewhere north of £50m, and Liverpool landed him for a fraction of that price.
If Carvalho doesn’t improve at all from this point, he’ll be a bargain, but this is a player whose ceiling is sky-high.
Carvalho has previously spoken about winning the Ballon d’Or one day, and he wasn’t joking when he made those comments.
This young man has come on leaps and bounds over the past 12 months, and being coached by Jurgen Klopp and playing alongside the likes of Mohamed Salah and Thiago will only see him improve further.
Carvalho has the potential to be one of the Premier League’s very best, and if he reaches his potential, he could be seen as one of the greatest bargains of the decade.
