It’s increasingly looking like Enzo Fernandez will be the main protagonist of this January transfer window.

The Argentine midfielder was an absolute star at the World Cup, and his performances in Qatar have caught the eye of the Premier League’s elite.

Indeed, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United are all reportedly circling the player, and, at the moment, it looks like Chelsea are leading the race.

However, Liverpool may well have a trick up their sleeve in the shape of Julian Ward.

The Reds’ Sporting Director has not only done business with Benfica before when signing Darwin Nunez, he’s reportedly a good friend of Benfica president, Rui Costa.

Neil Jones shared what he knows about this situation when speaking to Redmen TV.

“Rui Costa, it’s funny you mention him, I know Julian Ward is on his way out, but he has a good relationship with Julian Ward. I’ve heard Julian speak about Rui Costa and their conversations in the past, not about players, but Julian was involved with the Portuguese FA so it’s that sort of thing. It ticks a lot of boxes there,” Jones said.

This relationship between Ward and Costa could be Liverpool’s secret weapon in this race, but if they want to make the most of this situation, they’ll have to act quickly.

Indeed, as many will know, Ward is actually leaving Liverpool in the summer, and if this race drags on beyond January, the Reds will have lost the edge that having Ward at the helm will surely provide them.

Utilising Ward’s contact book next month will be vital, and it’s even more important due to the fact that he’ll be leaving the club at the end of the season.

Liverpool do have a secret weapon in this Fernandez race, but not for long.
