Liverpool are known admirers of Tottenham midfielder Victor Wanyama.

Liverpool should be interested in reports in The Mail claiming Tottenham Hotspur are ready to cash in on midfielder Victor Wanyama.

Liverpool are facing up to losing midfielder Emre Can who appears set to depart on a free transfer this summer and need to find a replacement.

The Mail reported in February that Liverpool are keen on Wanyama, and Steven Gerrard name dropped the player in an interview as the type of midfielder the Reds need to sign.

The report added: “Wanyama is considered a player of interest and knows several of the Liverpool squad well from his time at Southampton.”

Wanyama missed the first part of the season with injury after getting injured early on but has been selected to start only five league games, and was left on the bench for Tottenham’s FA Cup semi-final defeat to Manchester United.

The highlight of his season came against Liverpool, when he scored a rocket of a shot from long range in a dramatic 2-2 draw.

The problem for Liverpool is that The Mail’s report claims Tottenham consider Wanyama to be in the £50 million price range.

It is an excessive fee and may be more than Liverpool are prepared to pay. For context it is more than the Reds paid for Mohamed Salah last summer.

Liverpool would have to pay over market value for Wanyama, but Tottenham hold the cards.

If a move ends up being the difference maker for Liverpool to mount a title challenge next season it will be money well spent, and while it would be prudent to look at cheaper alternatives, they may not find a player of the same quality who has Premier League experience to match.
