Fabrizio Romano has said that Liverpool have been offered the chance to sign Ezequiel Garay, but have turned down the opportunity, on the Here We Go Podcast.
Liverpool are currently short of numbers at the back, with Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip both set to be out for the long-term.
Garay, therefore, could have presented an interesting option as a free agent.
But Liverpool apparently felt that bringing in the 34-year-old centre-back would not be worthwhile, as they are still more focused on keeping their current squad together, rather than bringing in new players.
“Garay was offered to Liverpool as a free agent but they said no. He’s not the type of player they want,” Romano said.
“They are in no rush, they are looking at the window for opportunities. They are more interested in extending contracts.”
At the moment Liverpool seem to be utilising Fabinho and Joel Matip together as their first choice defensive pairing.
Their stance over not signing another centre-back in January is a very intriguing one, and time will tell if it is the right decision.
While Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips have stepped in and performed admirably, there will surely be concerns if either of the inexperienced pair have to be relied upon for a lengthy period of time.
Garay, who was hailed as ‘quality’ by former Real Madrid boss Jorge Valdano (Goal), would have offered them greater knowhow, after experiencing top level La Liga football throughout his career.
But it seems that Klopp and Liverpool will be putting their faith in their young players for the time being.
