Liverpool are now closing in on the signing of Fulham playmaker Fabio Carvalho – but he could head back to the Championship side on loan.
That’s according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, who made the claim on Twitter late on Sunday night.
Romano claims Liverpool are in the ‘final stages’ of signing Carvalho with talks now ongoing with Fulham on deadline day.
Liverpool are offering €7million (£6million) for Carvalho, with the structure of the deal now being discussed between the two clubs.
Intriguingly though, Carvalho may not actually play for Liverpool this season because Fulham want him to return to West London on loan.
You have to imagine that Liverpool would be open to that kind of deal given that Carvalho wouldn’t be thrust straight into Premier League action.
Allowing Carvalho to play and thrive in a promotion-chasing Fulham side before heading to Anfield seems ideal for all.
Carvalho, 19, is a diminutive and skilful playmaker who was born in Portugal but represents England on the international stage.
Primarily a number 10, Carvalho has also played out wide for Fulham and is out of contract at the end of the season.

With seven goals and four assists in 18 Championship games this season, Carvalho has become one of the hottest prospects outside of the Premier League.
Hailed as ‘fantastic’ by Marco Silva, Carvalho has been a joy to watch in the Championship and now looks set for a huge move.
Fulham are probably sick of Liverpool by now having also raided them to sign Harvey Elliott in 2019.
Elliott and Carvalho could now join forces at Liverpool for years to come, forming an exciting partnership of which Fulham fans could only dream.
With Luis Diaz also on board, Liverpool could end the January transfer window with a bang by adding Carvalho too.
