Liverpool boosted their Premier League title hopes when they beat Tottenham Hotspur over the weekend.

Sadio Mane has insisted that Tottenham Hotspur must be respected for their performance during Liverpool’s 2-1 win at Anfield on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp’s side produced a rusty display, particularly in the second half when the London club were on top, but still managed to claw away with a valuable three points.

Versatile attacker Mane, who has been in a rich vein of form, started the encounter and didn’t have the type of impact he would’ve liked to have had on the game.

The senior Reds player admitted that his team must improve in future matches, but he defended Spurs for being organised and tough to beat.

“Yeah, of course [show improvements],” said Mane, as quoted by the Evening Standard. “But sometimes it’s difficult after the international break because we had three sessions together, or two I think, so everybody was a little bit away.

“Now we are back and we start with a win, I think it’s very important. We have three or four more days to train together, be like before and go again. I think it was a really, really difficult game and you can see also if you don’t create many chances, it can happen.

“Also we have to respect [Tottenham] because they played very well organised, and they played very good also. But I think the most important thing today was getting the three points and that’s it.”

Those three points mean that Liverpool are now sitting at the top of the Premier League table, but they could be leapfrogged by Manchester City if they beat Cardiff City on Wednesday night.

Pep Guardiola’s side are still in every competition and their title rivals will be hoping that one of those competitions can derail their performances and give them a boost in the league.

As for Tottenham, they are now sitting fourth in the Premier League table after their North London neighbours Arsenal beat Newcastle United 2-0 on Monday night.

They move into their new stadium on Wednesday night and they will be well aware that if they drop points then they could find themselves sitting outside of the Champions League places.
