Liverpool fans will be furious with Jordan Henderson after footage emerged of what he did in the 67th minute.
The Reds narrowly managed to overcome Nottingham Forest at Anfield earlier on Saturday with a 3-2 win on Merseyside, thanks to a double from Diogo Jota and a strike by Mohamed Salah.
Henderson will have been more relieved than most to see the Egypt international put Liverpool 3-2 ahead, as it was his error which allowed Morgan Gibbs-White to equalise.
What’s the story?
Well, footage has emerged online of Henderson telling Darwin Nunez to ignore Gibbs-White and stand on the edge of the box as Nottingham Forest prepared to launch a long throw into the box.
The Uruguay international listened to his captain and walked away from Gibbs-White, only for the Nottingham Forest No.10 to find himself in acres of space to volley the ball beyond Alisson.
Had Nunez been allowed to simply stay with the England Under-21 international, it is likely that the goal would not have happened.
It would have at least been a lot more difficult for Gibbs-White to score.
Fortunately for Henderson, Liverpool still managed to pick up all three points – had the Reds only drawn, we are sure this moment would be under a stronger spotlight.
How Jordan Henderson performed for Liverpool
Despite wrongly telling Nunez to ignore Gibbs-White, Henderson delivered a solid overall performance.
WhoScored shows that the England international made three successful tackles and registered a pass success rate of 88.7% at Anfield earlier on Saturday, while also taking two shots and embarking on one dribble.
Henderson kept things ticking over nicely and did enough defensively to limit Nottingham Forest.
Having said that, the 32-year-old will need to improve on this display when Liverpool face tougher opposition, as it was still far too open of a match for Jürgen Klopp’s liking.
