Liverpool midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri has withdrawn from the latest Switzerland squad because of a groin injury.

The 27-year-old, who joined the Reds from Stoke City last summer, has scored six goals for the Premier League leaders this season, but has not started a match since 30 January.

The Swiss Football Association announced via Twitter that Shaqiri has an inflammation injury in his groin that was revealed by tests at a hospital on Monday.

Shaqiri looked to be en route to becoming a key player for Jurgen Klopp’s side towards the end of 2018, registering half a dozen goals and two assists in his final 13 games of the year.

However, this calendar year he has started just two Premier League games, and has only played twice since the end of January, totalling a mere 39 minutes (Transfermarkt).

Here is how some Liverpool fans reacted on Twitter to Shaqiri’s Switzerland withdrawal:

Switzerland play the first of their 2020 European Championship qualifiers in Georgia on Saturday, before a home game against Denmark on 26 March.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have seven Premier League games remaining in 2018-19 and also face Porto in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
