The Reds midfielder has been a key element of Jurgen Klopp’s XI in their impressive Premier League and Champions League campaigns.

Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has been named in Alan Shearer’s Premier League Team of the Season and while many Reds fans agree with his inclusion, there has been criticism by a number of neutrals.
The Netherlands international has been an essential member of Jurgen Klopp’s starting XI this season, making 32 Premier League starts and 10 Champions League starts, while his overall appearance tally this term stands at 46 (Transfermarkt).
The Premier League posted a graphic of Shearer’s team on their Twitter feed on Tuesday and, save for Chelsea’s Eden Hazard, the XI is dominated by Liverpool and Manchester City players, understandably as they were head and shoulders above the 18 other teams.
Liverpool’s contingent in the XI is made up of defenders Andrew Robertson, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, while Wijnaldum is in the midfield and Sadio Mane is their sole attacker.
Much of the reaction on the social media platform was related to Wijnaldum, but some of the Anfield faithful were staunch in their defence of the midfielder amid a flurry of criticism:
Wijnaldum has made 138 appearances for Liverpool since his 2016 move from Newcastle United, scoring 13 goals and weighing in with 16 assists overall.
