The Reds goalkeeper was impressive in the Champions League game but stressed he ‘can’t be happy’ in the defeat despite his great performance.
A number of Liverpool fans have been praising goalkeeper Adrian following his downbeat comments after the 2-0 defeat to Napoli in the Champions League (official Reds website).
The Spaniard, who joined from West Ham United in the summer, has been impressive between the sticks for Jurgen Klopp’s side after Alisson Becker found himself on the sidelines due to injury in the Reds’ first Premier League game of the season against Norwich City.
Against Napoli, Adrian made a great double save early on, then truly showed his class in the second half when, with the scores still level at 0-0, he made a simply sensational one-handed save to keep out Dries Mertens’ volley from inside the six-yard box.
However, the 32-year-old’s heroics and all-round good performance were sadly not enough to see Liverpool leave the Stadio San Paolo with a point as mistakes in the defence saw the Italians twice get on the scoresheet late on.
“It’s my job as a goalkeeper, to try to save all the balls as much as I can and to try to help the team,” he told Liverpoolfc.com. “I gave my best, I tried hard. But at the end of the day we lost 2-0, so I can’t be happy.
“We knew it was going to be a hard game for us, like last season was. At the end of the game it was small details; the penalty switched the game for them totally and then we lost a bit of shape and conceded the second one… “We have to switch our minds now, we have a difficult game against Chelsea away on Sunday… learn from the mistakes and then turn the page.”
Given how good he was on the night, some Liverpool supporters eagerly rallied round to console him, making it clear just how impressed they were by his display and urging him to keep his chin up:
