Curtis Jones will play no part in Liverpool’s Premier League opener away to Norwich City on Saturday.
The Reds have a potentially tricky first game as Jurgen Klopp’s side visit the newly-promoted Championship winners from last season.
But the German manager has confirmed that Jones – who picked up a head injury in a friendly this week – will not be available for the trip to Carrow Road.
With Georginio Wijnaldum having left, it gives the Liverpool boss a bit of a headache and no doubt there’ll be fresh calls to replace the Dutchman.
But some fans of the Anfield side want a full Premier League debut for a certain Harvey Elliott.
The 18-year-old, who signed for the Merseysiders in a £4.3 million deal from 2019, has dazzled during the Reds’ pre-season campaign and according to The Athletic, may be in contention to start in place of Jones on Saturday.
And that’s certainly what some supporters would love to see.
Elliott no doubt has the confidence and the ability to play and impress against the Canaries, but it could be a risk by Klopp.
Let’s not forget that this is still only a teenage lad who has never started a Premier League game for Liverpool before and whether his full bow goes brilliantly or terribly, there’ll be inevitable surge in hype or criticism, neither of which is particularly healthy.
