Liverpool kicked off their title defence with a win – but they were made to work very hard for the 4-3 victory over Leeds United.

The Reds entered the season as champions having won the Premier League last season, and made a perfect start as Mohamed Salah scored from the spot.

Leeds didn’t lie down though, firing back through a stunning Jack Harrison goal, and even when Virgil van Dijk put Liverpool back ahead, Patrick Bamford nipped in to equalise again.

Salah blasted Liverpool in front again, but Leeds just kept coming back, this time with Mateusz Klich volleying home a great finish.

Another Salah penalty did end up sealing the win for Liverpool, but Jurgen Klopp’s men certainly knew they were in a game.

Liverpool will ultimately have to improve if they’re to beat Chelsea next weekend, and fans have one idea to solidify defensively.

Joe Gomez had some shaky moments alongside Van Dijk on Saturday, and fans believe it’s now time for Joel Matip to earn a recall.

Matip did come on as a substitute on Saturday, but fans now hope to see him start alongside Van Dijk just to bring some calmness to the back four.

Fans believe the 29-year-old would help settle the Liverpool defence, and feel that he now deserves another chance to shine with Gomez not at his best.
