Carlo Ancelotti thought the Reds defender should have been sent off in the first half of their Champions League meeting on Tuesday.

Napoli head coach Carlo Ancelotti has launched an attack on Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk regarding an incident in their Champions League clash on Tuesday.
The Dutch defender was shown a yellow card for a tackle on Partenopei attacker Dries Mertens in the first half.
With 11 men on the pitch, the Reds led through Mohamed Salah and maintained their advantage until full time, their 1-0 win seeing them into the last 16 at the Serie A giants’ expense.
Jurgen Klopp’s side needed to win with a clean sheet or by two clear goals to make the knockout stages, making the win all the sweeter considering the pressure on ther Merseysiders.
Although the booking means that Van Dijk will be suspended for the first match of the last 16, Ancelotti – whose side finished third in Group C for a place in the Europa League – feels that the Netherlands star warranted being sent off.
“From the video it is a red card. There are a lot of questions about VAR but when VAR comes in the Champions League it will be too late,” he is quoted by Sky Sports News as saying after the game.

Some Liverpool fans took umbrage to the former Chelsea manager’s comments and took to Twitter to express their thoughts on the matter:
