Heading into Sunday’s huge Premier League meeting with Manchester United, Liverpool fans will surely be feeling more optimistic than ever regarding the fixture.

For many years, the Red Devils were on top, but the balance of power seems to have shifted, with the Reds currently top of the top-tier table and through to the last 16 of the Champions League.

Jose Mourinho’s side, meanwhile, are a massive 16 points behind Liverpool and, although they did make the last 16 in Europe’s top club competition, they did so with a whimper by suffering a 2-1 defeat at Valencia last time out.

The Reds also boast arguably one of the best players in the world in Mohamed Salah, who on Friday added yet another award to his already burgeoning collection by being voted BBC African Footballer of the Year for the second time in a row.

The 26-year-old, who scored 44 goals in 52 Liverpool games last season and contested the Champions League final, beat Medhi Benatia, Kalidou Koulibaly, Sadio Mane and Thomas Partey to the gong, with a record 650,000 plus votes counted by the BBC.

Salah also impressed at international level as he scored twice for Egypt at this year’s World Cup, having netted twice in the qualifying match which took the Pharaohs to the tournament for the first time since 1990.
