Liverpool would have headed into their match against Manchester City quietly confident after their fine start to the new campaign. However when the full-time whistle blew the Reds left the field with their heads hanging in shame and their goal-difference significantly worse than it had been 90 minutes earlier.

City were already 1-0 up when Liverpool’s Sadio Mane was controversially sent off for a high foot and it only got worse from there, with two goals apiece from Gabriel Jesus and his late replacement Leroy Sane ensuring it was a terrible day at the office for Jurgen Klopp’s team.

Liverpool’s defence was completely torn apart, and a free-flowing attack can only get you so far when you have the likes of Ragnar Klavan trying to keep them out at the opposite end of the field.

The Estonia international has been in and out of Liverpool’s starting line-up this season, playing against Crystal Palace and City but taking his place on the bench against Watford and Arsenal earlier in the campaign.

On this evidence, it will be a while before he gets another shot.

Klavan played alongside Joel Matip and neither player did themselves any favours, with Liverpool desperately needing to have signed quality centre-back options when they had the chance.
