It wouldn’t quite be the transfer window without Jim White getting involved, would it?

White has become synonymous with the transfer window ever since he happened to working at the time of Manchester City signing Robinho in 2008.

His latest involvement is quite bizarre, as it involves Liverpool potentially signing Napoli defender Nikola Maksimovic this month.

On Sky Sports on Tuesday, Kaveh Solhekol claimed that White had told him that Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has fielded interest from Liverpool in Maksimovic.

It’s very ‘my mate down the pub heard from his brother-in-law’s butcher’, but would Maksimovic make sense for Liverpool?

Well, they certainly need a centre back; Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk are out of contract at the end of the season, and Maksimovic could help fill in.

Yet the Serbian is 29 and doesn’t really fit Liverpool’s usual recruitment mould, meaning Reds fans aren’t quite buying this one.

Some believe that Maksimovic would be a ‘bad target’, claiming that a move for him would make no sense and the club may as well have kept Dejan Lovren.

Others think that Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic or Napoli teammate Kalidou Koulibaly would be better targets, begging Liverpool to look elsewhere.
