The Foxes’ 2-1 triumph over the Citizens means Jurgen Klopp’s Reds are now six points clear of second-placed Tottenham at the top of the Premier League.
Leicester City picked up from where they left off before Christmas by downing Manchester City at the King Power Stadium and giving Liverpool a huge Premier League title race advantage in the process.
The Foxes claimed a superb 1-0 win at Chelsea on December 22, giving their fans plenty of Christmas cheer, but could they repeat the feat against Pep Guardiola’s incumbent champions, who would surely not fall to two defeats in a row?
However, lightning did indeed strike twice for both Leicester and Man City, and even though the visitors took the lead on 14 minutes through Bernardo Silva, the hosts didn’t need long to equalise as Marc Albrighton headed home from Jamie Vardy’s cross.
The Citizens dominated possession throughout the game but had just one more shot than the opposition, who in turn was more clinical, with one more effort on target than the reigning champions.
Nine minutes from time, Ricardo Pereira struck a superb goal, firing into the far corner from 20 yards from a cleared corner, and Leicester held on for a crucial win – and another crushing defeat for Man City.
The result means that Claude Puel’s charges now sit seventh in the table, while the Citizens have fallen to third – seven points behind Jurgen Klopp’s table-topping Reds and one behind Tottenham Hotspur.
Following the final whistle in the East Midlands, it wasn’t just Leicester fans who were delighted with the result, as plenty of Liverpool fans flocked to Twitter to declare their love for the 2015-16 champions:
