Joel Matip made his first start of the Premier League season for Liverpool today.
Some Liverpool fans on Twitter have criticised Joel Matip for his performance against Southampton on Saturday.
Liverpool beat the Saints 3-0 at Anfield to establish a two-point lead at the top of the Premier League table, and extend their 100% start to the season to six wins from six.
But not all of the Reds fans were happy with the performance.
Fit-again Matip started ahead of Joe Gomez in Jurgen Klopp’s XI, but despite scoring Liverpool’s second of the day on 21 minutes, many supporters weren’t blown away by his defensive showing.

Gomez can count himself very unlucky to have been benched, having impressed alongside Virgil van Dijk in Liverpool’s defence for the most part this season.
But there is a chance that Klopp will pair him alongside the £75 million Dutchman again next Saturday in a potential top-of-the-table Premier League clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
If Chelsea win at West Ham tomorrow by more than two goals then they will leapfrog Klopp’s side at the summit of the table.
