Joel Matip had a questionable game for Liverpool tonight.

Liverpool fans on Twitter are ripping into Joel Matip for his performance in tonight’s 0-0 draw with Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Joe Gomez’s injury and Virgil van Dijk’s suspension forced Klopp to field an experimental centre-back pairing of Matip and midfielder Fabinho.

The former Schalke man had quite a few hairy moments and nearly scored a first-half own goal, only for his point-blank shot to come off Alisson’s face.

Matip, who earns £70,000 per week at Anfield [Total Sportek], could and also should have scored at the right end, but he skewed Mo Salah’s cut-back wide of the post.

It was an overall questionable, heart-stopping display from the Reds defender, and here’s how fans of the Anfield club have reacted to his performance:

It’s worth pointing out that Liverpool wouldn’t have recorded a clean sheet against a team like this if Matip was completely useless, which he wasn’t.

The 27-year-old, a Bosman signing in 2016, did do a lot well, even if it didn’t make a lot of fans’ radars.

Van Dijk will be available for the second leg, though it remains to be seen if injured duo Gomez and Dejan Lovren are back.
