Liverpool’s hopes of reaching another Champions League final have taken a major hit after losing the first leg of their semi-final with Barcelona 3-0 on Wednesday night.

The Reds dumped Porto out of the last round, and were hoping to see off Lionel Messi and co in order to return to the Champions League final once again.

However, Jurgen Klopp’s men came up short at the Camp Nou, and fell behind when Jordi Alba picked up a superb ball to meet Luis Suarez’s perfectly-timed run, and he slotted home to make it 1-0.

Messi got his name on the scoresheet from close range in the second half when Suarez hit the crossbar, before the Argentinian scored a sensational free kick to make it 3-0.

Liverpool now have an absolute mountain to climb in the second leg, and it looks like they will miss out on the final after falling down to Messi’s greatness.

It wasn’t even a bad performance from Liverpool though, and 3-0 is certainly harsh on them, with some players impressing for the Reds at the Camp Nou.

Whilst most of the talk leading up to the game was about Virgil van Dijk, centre back partner Joel Matip really stepped up with a fine display.

The Cameroonian ace was praised for ‘masterclass’ performance, with some praising him as immense, feeling that he was a different player last night, and some fans who usually don’t rate him were converted.
