For any Liverpool fan hoping their defensive problems were behind them after their 0-0 draw against an unadventurous Manchester United, they were brought back to reality as Tottenham Hotspur ran riot at Wembley on Sunday.

Spurs had struggled at their temporary home in the early weeks of the campaign. However they found their rhythm against a Liverpool side that has attacking quality in abundance but cannot defend the easiest of balls.

Early goals from Harry Kane and Heung-min Son set the tone and further strikes from Spurs’ top-scorer and Dele Alli ensured Mohamed Salah’s 24th-minute effort was a mere consolation.

Dejan Lovren was hooked early in the game, with youngster Joe Gomez moving from full-back to centre-back, and the former Charlton Athletic defender did his best to stem the tide.

It was not to be, yet one cannot help but feel sorry for Gomez, who possesses the innate ability to excel at Anfield if he had some decent defenders alongside him.

Liverpool’s problems have been clear for some time, and it is bizarre to think that even allowing for the Virgil van Dijk controversy, the Reds opted not to sign another centre-back while they had the chance.

Alas they did not, and it is up to Gomez and his much-maligned teammates to dust themselves off and go again.
