And with a lot of Liverpool fans permitted to attend, Wijnaldum gave the supporters a memorable potential farewell with an all-action midfield display.
Particularly in the first half, the former Newcastle United star was everywhere and played with a sort of confidence that only the passionate Liverpool fans can inspire in players.
He left the field on 77 minutes to a standing ovation as Jurgen Klopp replaced him with James Milner.
