Liverpool face an uphill battle to advance into the semi-finals of the Champions League after losing 3-1 at Real Madrid on Tuesday night.

The Reds headed to the Spanish capital seeking a positive result, but came unstuck in a pretty dismal showing at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano.

A pinpoint diagonal pass from Toni Kroos found Vinicius Junior, and he squeezed between Trent Alexander-Arnold and Nathaniel Phillips to fire past compatriot Alisson.

Alexander-Arnold was at fault for the second, as he tried to head a ball back to Alisson and only found the waiting Marco Asensio to make it 2-0.

Mohamed Salah did give Liverpool hope – and crucially, an away goal – in the second half, but Vinicius added a third for Real to put them in the driving seat for a last four spot.

Liverpool were disjoined and lacklustre throughout, with very few players coming out of the game with much praise.

Striker Diogo Jota did impress some fans though, showing some quality to set up Salah’s goal before being surprisingly substituted.

Fans took to Twitter to praise Jota, suggesting that his work in the build-up for Salah’s goal was ‘brilliant’.

Others called him ‘something special’ and admitted that they love how he plays, suggesting that he was Liverpool’s only threat for much of the game and taking him off in the second half was a mistake.
