Liverpool crashed to a shock defeat away to Eddie Howe’s men on Sunday afternoon.

Liverpool suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Bournemouth on Sunday, with the Cherries coming back from 3-1 down to win 4-3 in dramatic fashion.

It was a superb advert for the Premier League but it also proved categorically that Liverpool’s defence is still extremely weak in the absence of summer signing Joel Matip.

Dejan Lovren has earned plenty of plaudits after seemingly turning his Anfield career around. However the Croatian looked poor alongside make-shift centre-back Lucas Leiva and the two men could not stop a late Bournemouth onslaught.

Unsurprisingly it was Lucas who suffered the brunt of criticism after the final whistle but Lovren has also had his detractors.

The defender has featured 12 times for Liverpool this season and looks a far better prospect under Reds boss Jurgen Klopp than he did under the German’s predecessor Brendan Rodgers, yet without Matip he looks shaky to say the least.
