Liverpool fans have reacted on Twitter to Roman Abramovich stepping aside as Chelsea’s owner.

On the eve of Chelsea’s League Cup final against Liverpool, the London club posted in a statement on Saturday evening that Abramovich is ‘giving trustees of Chelsea’s charitable foundation the stewardship and care’ of the club.

This all comes against the backdrop of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine this week, with many close to president Vladimir Putin coming under increased scrutiny.

Abramovich, who is one of Russia’s wealthiest men and has owned Chelsea for nearly two decades, is considered a close friend of Putin’s.

If he were to step aside for good, then many would question what that means for Chelsea’s future and how they compete against the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United, to name a few.

But there are some Liverpool supporters who feel that this is merely a PR move from the 55-year-old, and in case there is action taken against him, then he is protecting the English Premier League side.

They don’t think he will officially leave and Chelsea won’t find themselves without a figure head that has led them to trophy after trophy with his ruthless running of the club.

Thomas Tuchel even came out and admitted that he ‘understands’ the criticism towards the man at the top of Chelsea’s tree given Russia’s actions in Ukraine, as he told his press conference.

Either way, this is huge breaking news in the footballing world and it will no doubt overshadow Wembley’s showpiece final.

Ever since Abramovich stepped foot into Stamford Bridge in 2003, he has transformed the London club into one of the most powerful in world football – their recent European Cup triumph is proof of that.

Here is a selection of Liverpool supporters sharing their thoughts on Abramovich stepping aside:
