Liverpool had been linked with signing Fonte just a week earlier, with The Mirror speculating the Reds could seek to bolster their defence by bringing in the wantaway defender.

Fonte may be 33, but in the short term, he could have given Liverpool a big boost as they seek to close the gap on league leaders Chelsea and secure a top four place.

Defence has been a weak area for Liverpool all season, and Fonte’s performances for Southampton in recent seasons and for Euro 2016 champions Portugal has demonstrated he is a very capable defender.
