Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk celebrates scoring
Liverpool have been linked with a big move for Southampton centre-back Virgil van Dijk.
Van Dijk is one of two Saints players along with prospect Sam McQueen who the Reds are reportedly keen on, according to the Daily Star, who claim they could submit a double bid in January.
Liverpool have been no strangers to buying players from Southampton over the past few seasons.
Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne, and Sadio Mane have all made the switch since 2014, along with Rickie Lambert who was subsequently sold.
Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk heads clear
Van Dijk was signed by Southampton from Celtic in 2015, as a replacement for Toby Alderweireld, who had signed on loan to replace Dejan Lovren.
The centre-back has established himself as one of the top defenders in the Premier League, and played a key part in shutting out the Reds at the weekend in a hard fought 0-0 draw at St Mary’s.

While Southampton have cashed in on their top stars in the past, this has rarely happened mid-season, and Liverpool could have to wait until the summer to get their man.
This would be too late to help their title challenge this season, and may see them consider alternatives.
