Liverpool’s transfer plans were dealt a huge blow earlier this summer as they were forced to abandon plans to sign Virgil Van Dijk after a ‘tapping up’ row.
The Reds offered a public apology to Southampton and ruled themselves out of the race for the talented centre-back.
So understandably there was some concern when at the weekend odds plummeted on rivals Everton making a blockbuster bid for the Dutchman.

At one stage odds dipped as low as Everton being 2/1 favourites to sign the defender, although they have since backed up to 11/4 with SkyBet.
Van Dijk worked with current Everton boss Ronald Koeman at Southampton with great success, and the Toffees are in the middle of a big spending spree – reinforced by the cash they will receive for selling Romelu Lukaku.

The Liverpool Echo however report Van Dijk only has eyes for Liverpool, and would resist moves elsewhere if he leaves Southampton.
The Reds do have the advantage of playing Champions League football next season, which gives them another edge over rivals Everton.
Nevertheless, the rumours caused a real stir, with Liverpool fans reacting with a mixture of disbelief and bitterness at the prospect of their top target moving to their rivals.
