Liverpool fans taunt Southampton that new signing will eventually end up at Anfield.

Southampton may be dealing with uncertainty over Virgil Van Dijk’s future at the club, but that has not stopped them concentrating on their own transfer business.

Yesterday the Saints completed an impressive deal to sign Juventus midfielder Mario Lemina, with BBC Sport reporting a fee of £15.4 million.

Mario Lemina of Juventus FC celebrates after scoring the opening goal during the Serie A match between AS Roma and Juventus FC at Stadio Olimpico on May 14, 2017 in Rome, Italy.

Lemina is the club’s record signing and was described by club vice-chairman as an ‘outstanding talent’.

The 23-year-old is a former France under-21 international who represents Gabon at senior level.

The deal is a further sign of Southampton’s ability to buy young talent for reasonable prices, and dare we say it, re-sale value.

It is this which led to Liverpool supporters taunting Southampton after the deal, that Lemina will move to the Reds in future seasons.

Since 2014, Liverpool have raided Southampton for Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Nathaniel Clyne, and Dejan Lovren, and attempted to sign Virgil Van Dijk earlier this summer, a saga which has still left the defender unsettled.

Lemina has been loosely linked with Liverpool before, with The Independent reporting their interest in 2015 citing Italian sources.
