Did Liverpool try to move Steven Gerrard on before they did?

Ex Liverpool striker Michael Owen has been creating more headlines with the release of his autobiography.
This time following controversial comments on Newcastle, it is Liverpool and former teammate Steven Gerrard who are in his sights.
Speaking about the current Rangers boss, Owen was quoted by The Mirror stating Liverpool wanted to get rid of Gerrard two years before they actually did.
Gerrard left Liverpool in 2015 to sign with LA Galaxy, after 17 years with the club.
Owen said: “In Steven’s case, I severely doubt whether he really wanted to go and play in the States in 2015. I’ve heard that the club wanted him out two years prior to when he actually left.”
Owen’s comments are based on hearsay, or if there is a credible source then he does not name them.

This makes his claims look like mere gossip, and they do little but stir up controversy.
Brendan Rodgers was manager for the entire time period Owen refers to, and nearly led Liverpool to the league title in 2014, with Gerrard playing a key role.
Needless to say, Liverpool fans are not impressed with Owen…
