Liverpool fans are reacting on Twitter to Manuel Akanji’s latest Switzerland display.

Akanji scored the only goal of the game – albeit deflecting Emil Forsberg’s shot beyond his own goalkeeper – as Switzerland suffered a last 16 defeat to Sweden on Tuesday.

Despite that, however, a number of Liverpool fans appear to have taken a shine to the Borussia Dortmund centre back, who was linked with a move to Anfield ahead of the January transfer window, while still an FC Basel player.

And some are ruing their club’s failure to act.

Though Liverpool may not have Akanji, they do have Virgil van Dijk, the centre back they eventually signed for a club record fee in January.

And Van Dijk made an immediate impression on the Reds, whom he helped to the Champions League final in May.

Would Akanji be a good signing for Liverpool, even with Van Dijk on board?
