Long term Liverpool target Julian Brandt has left Bayer Leverkusen to sign with Borussia Dortmund.

Brandt, 23, cost just £22 million, The Mirror reported, after a clause was activated following Leverkusen’s failure to qualify for the Champions League.

Liverpool came close to pushing to sign Brandt in 2017, before deciding to move for Mohamed Salah instead, Goal reported.

This probably worked out in everybody’s favour, with Salah a huge hit at Anfield and Brandt getting an extra two seasons to develop.

But it is a little surprising that Liverpool have not been back in for him this summer considering his bargain price tag.

This past season Brandt has played in an attacking midfield role with great success, and he could have filled the gap left by Coutinho in the Liverpool side.

Brandt’s availability was no secret, so it appears Liverpool simply chose to sit this one out. Time will tell whether that is a mistake.
