Germany opened their Euro 2016 campaign with a 2-0 win over Ukraine in Lille – and two reported Liverpool targets were in action.
Joachim Loew’s world champions saw Group C rivals Poland beat Northern Ireland 1-0 earlier on Sunday, but laid down a marker with a comfortable win over Ukraine.
Defender Shkodran Mustafi – standing in for the injured Mats Hummels – headed Germany in front in the first half, and a late goal from Bastian Schweinsteiger sealed the win.
That leaves Germany top of Group C after one game, and whilst many will have been impressed with the performance, Liverpool fans were particularly interested in the match.
Recent reports from the Daily Mail suggested that Liverpool scouts have been watching Germany duo Jonas Hector of Koln and Bayern Munich’s Mario Gotze – a player who made his name under Reds boss Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund.
Both players started for Germany against Ukraine, and Liverpool fans tuned in to see how their prospective new signings fared – with very differing results.
Liverpool fans took to Twitter after left back Hector impressed for Germany, with many urging the club to get a deal tied up for the Koln star as soon as possible.
However, Bayern star Mario Gotze looked off the pace in an unfamiliar striking role, and many Liverpool fans now think the club should avoid trying to land him, despite his superb record under Klopp at Dortmund.
