Every Liverpool player performed well on Saturday as Jurgen Klopp’s side thrashed West Ham United 4-1 at Anfield.

Well, nearly everyone.

There is always one player who doesn’t please the fans, even during emphatic victories, and that man yesterday was Liverpool centre-back Joel Matip.

The Cameroon international improved in the second half, though during the first 45 minutes he struggled with the physical presence of Marko Arnautovic who got the better of him on a few occasions.

And fans of the Reds have expressed their disappointment with him on Twitter, even offering the ultimate insult by bracketing him with Dejan Lovren.

Matip has his good days, but he also, like any centre-back, has some terrible ones and although his performance yesterday wasn’t dreadful, it does make you wonder how he’d fare against a better attack.

Liverpool’s defence has been up and down this season, and Matip’s showing did little to inspire confidence that he can be Virgil van Dijk’s long-term partner in the heart of their defence.
