A number of Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to laud Joel Matip’s performance during the Reds’ stunning win over Napoli on Tuesday that booked their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League.
A first-half goal from Mo Salah and late save from Alisson saw Liverpool claim the three points that they needed to leap ahead of the Serie A side and into second place in their group.
It was the kind of night that will have evoked memories of 14 years ago when Steven Gerrard’s incredible strike kept Liverpool’s European hopes alive on their way to their fifth triumph in the competition.
Arguably one of the most impressive performances on the night came from Matip, who has not always been the most popular player in the squad and has had to bide his time with Joe Gomez performing superbly alongside Virgil van Dijk.
The centre-back was brilliant alongside the Dutchman against Napoli however. He regularly showed ambition with his passing, frequently threading the ball through the channels and finding his teammates in the final third.
And in response, a number of Reds fans have suggested on social media that they have just seen one of the 27-year-old’s best performances for the club.
