Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum was asked to play in an unusual role for the club’s biggest game of the season.

Suspension to Jordan Henderson and injury to Emre Can meant Wijnaldum was selected to play in a deep lying midfield role away at The Etihad.

He came through it at Goodison Park at the weekend in credit, but after 45 minutes against City, the knives were out.

Wijnaldum was exposed as Liverpool entered the break 1-0 down, and they were fortunate not to have conceded a second.

Half-time gave Liverpool a breather, and Wijnaldum came out a different player.

He appeared more in control, and played a part in Mohamed Salah’s equaliser.

The goal halted City’s charge, and gave Liverpool onus to kick on and secure an impressive victory, sealing their place in the semi-finals.

Wijnaldum was suddenly seen as a success in his new role.

He wasn’t spectacular, but he did what was needed, staying steady in possession (82 per cent completion rate), and was only dispossessed once.
