Everton have announced they have agreed a deal to purchase a site for a new stadium, which could cost £300 million to build.

The club intend to self-fund the stadium, with Liverpool City Council acting as a guarantor, The BBC report.

The Toffees have long been plotting to move away from Goodison Park, which has a limited capacity of 40,000. The new stadium could be closer to 60,000.

Iranian investor Farhad Moshiri is key to the plans, with their previous attempt to relocate abandoned back in 2009.

Stadium plans have yet to be drawn up, unveiled and planning permission must be sought, but this is a significant first step for the club.

The new ground could top rivals’ Liverpool’s Anfield capacity, which is at 54,000 even after their recent extension.

Liverpool have also previously wanted to build a new ground, but in the case of both clubs it has been a real challenge to find a suitable location and secure the funding.

The Reds appear to have stepped back from their ambitions in this regard, building a new stand which opened earlier this season.

Seeing Everton pushing ahead with their own plans has brought about mixed emotions from Reds’ fans.
