Can has been suffering with a back injury and this will not have helped his cause but to not even make the provisional XI is a bitter blow for the midfielder.
This would have been Can’s first World Cup. He had played 35 games in all competitions for Liverpool this season before getting injured.
The Liverpool star has helped the Reds reach the Champions League final this season and he is fighting an uphill battle to make the decisive match with Real Madrid.
Can’s future at Liverpool is in doubt because he has let his contract run down amid strong interest from Juventus.
While this has drawn the ire of many Liverpool fans, supporters have been sympathetic to his international misfortune.
